Johnson Banks maps creatives’ inspiration for V&A tour guides

Johnson Banks has teamed up with the Victoria & Albert Museum to produce ten maps charting the inspiration of ten luminaries including designer Paul Smith and musician Florence Welch through the museum’s collections.

Consultancy founder Michael Johnson says he initiated discussions with the V&A in the spring about ’ways to show how [it] influenced people’.

A list of people who would select ’an interesting or unusual journey through the museum’ was compiled and the personalities were invited to tour the museum and select items of inspiration.

Johnson says he adapted a folding technique to show glimpses of map content when closed, which when unfolded reveal a navigable trail illustrated with a visual signature such as ’stripes for Smith or ginger hair for Welch’.

The A2-sized maps will be displayed on stands for the duration of the London Design Festival, but more may be printed later, Johnson says.
