Light festival seeks North East creatives

This year’s Lumiere festival of light in Durham has added a new commissioning programme – Brilliant – with a call for entries announced targeting creatives ‘originally form the North East of England’.

A £40 000 budget to support the Brilliant commissions has been set aside, but the number of commissions has not yet been determined.

The biannual Lumiere event was initiated by Durham County Council in 2009 (inaugural event pictured) and is supported by the Arts Council. Artichoke – which designed the Sultan’s Elephant parade in London in 2006 – is producing the festival and handling the Brilliant competition process.

Responding to an open brief that calls for ‘witty and imaginative’ ideas, Brilliant entrants – who can apply until 7 March – must specify a budget and detail material costs. Details can be found at http://www.artichoke.uk.com/blog/be_brilliant.

A spokeswoman for Artichoke says ‘professional and non-professional’ applications are encouraged for Brilliant entrants and they will be judged on the quality of the proposal and the strength of the idea.

Lumiere and its Brilliant programme runs from 17-20 November.
