Neville Brody awarded D&AD President’s Medal as pencils announced

Neville Brody has been awarded the D&AD President’s Medal, while design Black Pencils have gone to Samuel Wilkinson and Hulger for the Plumen light bulb and Apple for the iPad.

Six Black Pencils were awarded in total – with two going to Wieden & Kennedy Portland for its The Man Your Man Could Smell Like campaign for Old Spice, and the remaining two going to @radical.media for its The Wilderness Downtown Arcade Fire promo for Google Labs and JWT New York for its Burma Campaign for Human Rights Watch.

Brody, who is set to become dean of the Royal College of Art’s School of Communication later this year, was awarded the President’s Medal for 2011 by D&AD president Sanky.

A total of 59 Yellow Pencils were awarded, from 110 nominations and 678 in-book mentions.

Among the Yellow Pencil winners were GBH, for its Puma Unity Initiative, Puma Phone and Puma Clever Little Bag; The Chase, for its Almost Extinct calendars for the BBC Wildlife Fund and its a Picture Speaks a Thousand Words project for Paul Thompson Photography, with copywriter Nick Asbury.

Also bagging Yellow Pencils were Cartlidge Levene, for its Bristol Museum and Art Gallery wayfinding; Wallpaper magazine, for its custom covers, worked up with Kin; and Carmody Groarke, for its Studio East Dining project.

This year, D&AD has combined its Student and Professional Awards. The winners of the 2011 Student of the Year Award are Christian Asmar, Manu Manceda and Virginia Feito of Miami Ad School, Madrid, Spain.

D&AD and US-based advertising group The One Club have also announced the 2011 of the Pencil Rankings, which measure performance by combining results from the One Show and the D&AD Awards.

The top design consultancy for 2011 is GBH, while the top advertising agency is Wieden & Kennedy Portland.
