Ottolenghi to launch ‘glamorous’ Soho restaurant

Israel-based architect Alex Meitlis has created the ‘glamorous’ design for the interiors of chef Yotam Ottolenghi’s new restaurant, Nopi, which is set to open in London’s Soho.

Meitlis has worked with Ottolenghi for eight years and has designed the interiors for all the chef’s branches.

Meitlis says, ‘I’ve been the designer from day one, so I’ve helped consult on all design aspects of the brand.’

He adds, ‘We wanted something different from the rest of the chain, as it’s a new venture. It’s all about the energy of the place. We wanted a modern brasserie with an Ottolenghi twist. The food is very fabulous and outrageous but also very simple, and the design tries to echo that.’

The environment aims to be a ‘mix of informal, familiar and familial’, featuring brass table- and bar-tops, white and gold Greek marble and exposed brickwork.

The lower ground floor sees diners sitting on bar stools around large, canteen-style tables in the kitchen itself. Meitlis explains, ‘It puts you in very close contact with the food. Ottolenghi’s all about the energy of the people working there and in this way you’re physically exposed to that.’

Nopi opens on 24 February.
