Sorrell Foundation seeks Saturday arts and design club venues

The Sorrell Foundation is seeking partners for an initiative to run Saturday courses in art and design for youngsters.

The National Art and Design Saturday Club initiative is currently running at institutions in Hereford, Leeds, Plymouth and Cleveland, and involves around 100 pupils, according to The Sorrell Foundation co-chairman Sir John Sorrell.

Speaking at Tate Modern last night in his final lecture as chairman of the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, Sorrell said he was initially looking to roll out the project to 40 locations, and involve 1000 youngsters. He appealed for art and design colleges to take part.

Sorrell says the scheme is inspired by the Saturday classes he attended at Hornsey School of Art when he was 14. He says, ‘Within half an hour in that class, I knew this was what I wanted to do.’
