Three British designers among Sappi winners

Three British designers are among the ten winners in the European Ideas that Matter initiative, run by paper producer Sappi.

Winners of the competition receive a grant to implement their print-based ideas to support the charity or non-profit organisation of their choice. Four runners up were also selected.

Marie Benstead, director of Eve Design, was honoured for her campaign Close to the Edge, in support of Changing Times, a charity that uses music teaching and performance to aid the rehabilitation of prisoners and ex-prisoners.

London-based graphic designer Emmi Salonen was awarded for her project Catalyst Inspiring Arts Ideas for Teachers, for the Prince’s Foundation for Children and the Arts.

John Corcoran, managing director of Wire Design, was selected for his entry Beyond Big Type (pictured), which supports the organisation Employers’ Forum on Disability. The campaign looks at producing a best practice toolkit to provide more inclusive and effective workplace communication.

Awards judge Michel Chanaud, managing director of Pyramyd in France, says, ‘I was particularly inspired by the entry “Beyond Big Type”, which showed designers can be active in their role towards the disabled.’

The winners and runners up will be recognised at the ITM tenth anniversary celebration in Brussels, Belgium, on 10 October.
