Tom Dixon designs first co-working space

Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio has created the interiors for Interchange – a new space for start-ups in north London. This is the first time the designer has created a co-working space.

The 8,400m2 Interchange space is in Camden and is spread over three sites. The Atrium space is in Camden Markets and set to open next month. It will join the already-open Triangle space on the site. A further space, Utopia, has opened in Primrose Hill.

Interchange’s backers say startups that are part of the initiative will have the opportunity to open retail space in Camden Market.

The Camden spaces have been designed by architect Barr Gazetas, with interiors by Tom Dixon and DRS.

As well as office space, the development features an on-site gym, restaurant, bar and event spaces. Its backers – Market Tech Holdings – say it will also “provide access to affiliate investors and industry specialists”.

Workspace available ranges from flexible desk space that can be rented by the day to private officers for larger companies. The design features “expert curation of complex floor plans and space use”, according to Market Tech Holdings.

Vanessa Butz, managing director of Interchange, says: “We have been inspired by the history of the market as a key ‘Interchange’ of commerce and trade and we’re now supporting the future of business in Camden.”

She adds: “The area has a strong community of creatives, artists and designers, which is another reason why it’s a perfect location for new companies.”
