Universal Design Studio works on Mulberry store

Universal Design Studio has created the interiors for fashion brand Mulberry’s new flagship store in London’s Bond Street.

The consultancy was appointed two years ago following a creative-led pitch and was briefed to help Mulberry ‘redefine what its stores should look like in the future’, says Universal Design Studio co-founder Jay Osgerby.

The store, which opened yesterday, is lined by a 40m-long dry stone wall, which improves energy conservation by helping the store retain heat in the winter and cooling it in the summer.

Universal Design Studio associate director Hannah Carter-Owers says, ‘Because it’s such a big, deep store we needed one great big architectural gesture to tie the whole space together and that’s when we started playing with the dry stone wall.’

The consultancy was keen to emphasise the theme of craft and craftsmen for the interiors, using handcrafted fittings and materials that are considered ‘real’, such as stone, oak and brass, to reflect Mulberry’s passion for and investment in skills, says Osgerby.

The 1645m2 store features a concrete ‘warehouse-style’ floor, an 8.7m-long polished bronze cashdesk, handmade irregular tiles and oak, brass and lacquered fixtures and fittings.

The majority of the fittings are free-standing and flexible, allowing them to be manipulated for different collections.

This store will be very easy to produce as its simple design requires very little detailing to the extent that some stores require.
