V&A seeks designer for flagship Futureplan project

The Victoria & Albert Museum in London is seeking a designer or architect to lead the refurbishment of its 17th- and 18th-century European galleries – a project it describes as a ‘flagship’ in its Futureplan programme.

The galleries 1-7, Europe 1600-1800 were last refurbished in the 1970s and the £325 000 project will complete the 10-year restoration of the V&A’s Aston wing.

The project will include the design of a permanent exhibition and is expected to complete by the end of 2014.

The 1300m2 suite of galleries is the next stage of development following the redevelopment of the Medieval and Renaissance Galleries, carried out by McInnes Usher McKnight Architects.

The museum says, ‘The lead architect or designer should have the experience and vision to return these grand rooms to their original scale, highlighting their architectural features, and to undertake a complete redisplay and reinterpretation of the collection; combining sensitivity to the building, the period and collections with an imaginative, sustainable and transformative approach.’

The deadline for tenders or expressions of interest is 17 March. For more information visit http://ted.europa.eu, reference number 2011/S 32-053261.
