Brits are renowned for being ill-equipped when speaking foreign languages, but translation errors can cause problems too, if we stick to our own tongue.

Take the Transformations conference held last week in Berlin by the German design council and The British Council. Design Council chief executive Andrew Summers was unaware that when he showed slides of Priestman Goode’s much-vaunted Bisque radiators, as an example of the excellence of Millennium Products, the largely German audience heard in their headphones that they were looking at a necklace.

Or does Summers know something we don’t about the London product design group’s diversification plans?
