The former design director at Smith & Milton, Gayle Carpenter, and head of brand communications, Mark Newby, have joined forces to launch start-up C&N Design, with a view to transforming it into a multidisciplinary group.

The London consultancy will offer corporate identity work, brand development, literature design, direct mail and packaging design. It has already secured four major clients and will start hiring staff next year, according to Newby.

‘We have a broad range of experience between us to bring to the table. We set up C&N because we wanted more freedom and autonomy. So far, it is going really well,’ says Newby.

Newby was at Smith & Milton for five years and Carpenter worked there for three years.

‘We were at Smith & Milton for some time and it seemed like the right time to start up on our own,’ adds Carpenter.
