Design Project paints Situation Leeds’ branding

Situation Leeds, a forthcoming arts festival that has been two years in the pipeline, has unveiled a brand identity created by Leeds-based consultancy Design Project.

The event is the first of its kind to be held in the region and is being instigated by artists themselves, rather than by local authorities. A five-strong steering group, which comprises members from The Leeds Metropolitan University Gallery and East Street Arts, is running the festival.

Design Project was appointed to create a brand identity last December. The logo is based on the idea of collaboration and interplay between artists and the city, says James Littlewood, partner at Design Project.

The festival will promote public art throughout the city and will feature exhibition and education initiatives. So far up to 30 artists have been commissioned to produce sculptures and art objects.

East Street Arts artistic director Karen Watson says, ‘The visual arts are not very strong in Leeds… This will put the focus on the city and put pressure on bodies to look at public art strategy.’

The festival will be held between 16 and 29 May.
