Up the Torture Garden path
Rubber Banned captures patrons of a fetish club in all their glory. Clare Dowdy takes a closer look
The Great Eastern, with its mix of lunchtime City suits and ‘creative industries’ clientele in the evening, does not appear to be the most natural home for such images. But the show came about through personal contact rather than any formulated PR strategy. The hotel’s creative director Simon Willis, a friend of Perou’s, offered to stage the shots when he heard that no publication had shown an interest in publishing them.
As a way of cataloguing a movement and a time in our culture, they work well, but that alone doesn’t make them outstanding images.
