Pentagram boss and his sub-standard subbing

Pentagram partner Fernando Gutierrez is down to judge best magazine design in this year’s Guardian student media awards. By heck, it were never like that in our day. When we were at college, there were only about three categories, all seemingly judged by Rosie Boycott. Now you get design specialists and prizes for everything.

Will it bring back memories of inky photocopies and all-night stapling for Gutierrez? He says not, though he will try to spot any ‘rough diamonds’.

More seriously, he adds, ‘I don’t know what to expect, but I’m looking for something that’s different and engaging that breaks the rules. Editorial is a bit bland at the moment – advertising’s just taken over. I’ll forgive the mistakes if the thinking is right.’

You can see him teaching double flatplanning already.
