Alphabetical Studio has been appointed by the Design Museum to create the identity for its 2011 Designers in Residence programme.

The consultancy was appointed for the project in April, having been invited to a credentials pitch following work for the Clerkenwell Design Week exhibition last year (pictured).

Simon Hassan, Hye-Yeon Park, Will Shannon and Jade Folawiyo have been chosen as the four 2011 Designers in Residence and will develop new work as part of the exhibition, which runs from 24 August to 22 January 2012.

Consultancy Faudet-Harrison will carry out exhibition design, creating bespoke physical structures for the space.

Alphabetical creative partner Tommy Taylor says, ’The brief they set the four designers [in residence] is “in pursuit of imperfection”, so we’re considering that in the graphics.

’With the identity, we have to consider the four designers’ individual personalities, but also bring them together.’

The identity will use a different typeface and colour for each designer, with the overall exhibition identity bringing them together into one design which will be seen across all exhibition graphics, wayfinding and signage; online; and on all printed promotional materials.

Exhibition curator Margaret Cubbage says, ’We gave them very little in terms of guidelines for the look and feel. Although it comes from the theme of imperfection, we didn’t want anything too rough and ready.’
