London could be the site of a major showcase for British design under a Labour government, it was announced last week.

Shadow National Heritage Secretary Jack Cunningham presented the party’s plan for a single design information centre to delegates at the Industry Forum conference, Labour and the Creative Economy.

“There is a failure in Britain to focus on our great design strengths. We need a coherent approach from the institutions in the field which a Labour Department of National Heritage will promote,” he said.

No further details on the scheme are available, but the principle is supported by Chartered Society of Designers president Nick Jenkins. “It’s terrific if it can be organised properly,” he says.
