Ahead of its report to Creative & Cultural Skills later this year, what do you think the Design Skills Advisory Panel should put at the top of its agenda for improving the training of young talent in the design industry?

Keren House

First educate the industry to value the people that come into it. This starts with design education – don’t increase course sizes without the commensurate increase in staff. Manage expectations – designers are thinkers and doers, but some are better at one than the other. Pathways should be identified and qualifications should be clear and appropriate to direct graduates towards the right employers and vice versa. Don’t perpetuate a system of virtual slave labour under the guise of work placement schemes. Educate the employers to value people in the industry.
