We are determined to shatter one of the last remaining, and most sensitive, taboos: death.

Hot on the heels of Mike Cotts’ organic coffins (DW 16 March) comes designer Mike Sedgwick’s less ephemeral ‘time vessels’, designed to offer an aesthetic alternative to traditional coffins while overcoming the problem of burial space.

The prototypes are sculpted from birchwood with inner sanctums for ashes and memorabilia and are available in 12 designs, including Saturn, Zona and Ziggurat (no relation to the design consultancy Ziggurat Brand Consultants).

According to Sedgwick, they will eventually be manufactured from aluminium, stainless steel, marble granite and resin.
