Educational boards reassessed

BTEC and the London Examination Board have merged to become the Edexcel Foundation. Teesside consultancy DTW won the job of creating the new board’s identity in an unorthodox seven-way creative pitch.

A DTW spokesman says his consultancy came late to the pitch. Six other consultancies were in a paid pitch but DTW won the work with a last minute, unpaid entry.

DTW director Robin Treacher says: “The brief was to take characters from the former logos, yet not be reminiscent of the old bodies.” He adds: “This is the first merger between an academic and vocational board to offer one type of hybrid exam, and I expect further boards will follow suit.”

Unveiled three weeks ago, the black and white logo, known by its creators as the “guillotine”, will be implemented on to buildings, literature, promotional material and publications.

Meanwhile, The Jenkins Group has designed a new identity for the Early Education organisation after being approached by the client on the strength of previous work in the education field.

Formerly known by the cumbersome name British Association for Early Childhood Education, Early Education is the new name put forward by The Jenkins Group for the pressure group. The consultancy went on to create a dark blue double E identity.

The identity, representing a bird in flight, or an open book, is to be implemented by The Jenkins Group on to stationery, promotional material, annual reports and newsletters.
