Design Council keen on Marketing awards

David Rivett (DW 24 May) is unhappy that the Design Council is sponsoring Marketing’s design awards, which only have three “effectiveness” awards among a total of 24.

The Design Council is trying to lever awards which recognise the business contribution that design makes to a wide range of other organisations’ awards schemes. Our intention is to make design a recognised awards category not just through the Design Business Association, the Chartered Society of Designers and British Design and Art Direction, but through bodies associated with management specialisms and broader commercial areas like manufacturing.

As a sponsor, we have a degree of influence over what our partners do with their awards, but the final decision about what to recognise and reward is theirs. In the case of the Marketing awards, there is absolutely no question of it being the Design Council’s decision to “tag on” only three awards of which David Rivett approves.

We believe that the wide range of the Marketing awards is absolutely appropriate for that professional sector and we are pleased to be supporting its scheme.

We are also delighted to be supporting seven or eight other awards schemes in the near future.
