Dyson Appliances has been named as one of the UK winners of the national round of the European Design Prize.

Other winners are prosthetic limbs manufacturer Blatchford, Innovative Technologies Group, JCB Special Products, and computer designer and manufacturer Psion.

The six UK winners now go forward, with an international jury due to announce the European Design Prize winners in January.

The EDP is one of the awards schemes the Design Council has linked up with in its push to communicate the value of design to key business decision-makers.

Another such partnership is the Chartered Society of Designers’ first Designer of the Year Award, which was awarded to architect Chris Wilkinson after a vote by CSD members. More than 300 of the CSD’s 7000 members voted on a shortlist selected by a panel of design and business experts.

Runners-up were Dolphin creative directors Rob Petrie and Phil Sims, Tomato’s Jason Kedgley and Dylan Kendle, fashion designer Alexander McQueen, film titles designer Kyle Cooper, and Vince Frost at Frost Design.

The deadline for the 1997 RSA Student Design Awards is 28 November, with extended deadlines for team projects. Winners of the 150 000 prize money will be announced next May.
