Milan offers designers a chance for future thinking

I could not agree more with David Redhead’s piece on the attitudes of lugubrious product designers to events such as the Milan Furniture Fair (Private View, 24 April).

As someone who started going to this trade fair last year, after a long break, I can only suggest more of my product design brethren do the same.

It is such a melting pot of ideas and creatively it is worth going just for the atmosphere, without even considering the potential for new business.

Many of these product designers who harp on about stars (this industry does have a few of its own) are missing the point.

The area of interiors and technology is part of our future, as electronics, and so on, disappear into the background, we find ourselves in rooms no longer dominated by the great chunks of technology that we have had to put up with for the past 50 years.

Such interiors will have more in keeping with a Victorian environment where our living spaces are dominated by things we sit on, sleep on, eat on and now, react with, in a far more subtle way.
