Nobody could accuse the design business of being strait-laced or narrow-minded.

The question of The Body Shop’s design team last week was “Will Cinderella Get To The Ball?” after their leader Jon Turner fell off a chest of drawers while clambering into his elaborate costume for the Alternative Miss World competition.

Turner was hoping to repeat the success he gained in an earlier drag contest. But sadly he was robbed as – would you believe it – a woman took top prize.

And prima donna Callum Lumsden of the Lumsden Design Partnership is still smarting from coming second in the Miss Royal College of Art competition 1978. “I looked very attractive, but lost to The Supremes,” he laments. But he did win a Mod of the Year competition and rumour has it that he has also appeared publicly as Princess Anne.

Alan Coley of Light & Coley always dresses up, especially for the office Christmas party. “Last year I was Elvis and my partner Laurie Light was Roy Wood”, he says, admitting that he “worked hard at appearing a total wally”.
