Tom Phillips creates building façade artwork

Artist Tom Phillips is creating a permanent public artwork for the façade of property developer Hines’ One Grafton Street building in London’s Mayfair.

The contemporary frieze will run above the ground floor of the mixed-use development, wrapping around the building from Grafton Street to Hay Hill. The frieze is inspired by the area’s ironwork features, including balustrades, screens and gateways.

Royal Academician Phillips has reacted to these features by creating an abstracted series of monochrome railings, rendered in steel and painted glossy black.

Phillips says, ‘I thought that a regular railing would provide the ideal basis for the design, with a group of elements being “taken for a walk”, intertwining and swapping ends with each other at regular intervals.’

Hines UK commissioned Phillips as part of its public art programme, which includes the One Spirit Showcase, a series of collaborations to support the arts.
