Annotated pages from some of the world’s greatest illustrators

The House of Illustration is holding a fund-raising auction which will see a collection of annotated first editions from some of the world’ greatest authors go under the hammer.

The House of Illustration opened earlier this year as the world’s first dedicated space to showcase illustration. The project was initiated by Quentin Blake, who has donated his life’s work to the organisation’s archives.

For the auction, 34 acclaimed illustrators – and some authors – have returned to one of their classic books, adding extra illustrations, comments on existing drawings and personal insights about the motivation behind characters.

There will be 38 lots going under the hammer, from illustrators including Posy Simmonds, David Gentleman and Raymond Briggs.

The House of Illustration says the proceeds from the auction will go towards extending its exhibition range, encouraging and fostering new illustration talent and supporting illustration and outreach activities.

The auction will be held at Sotheby’s, 34-35 New Bond Street, London W1A 2AA on Monday 8 December at 7.30pm.
