The ultimate designer wedding

Eight high profile designers are collaborating on a wedding for a Finnish couple marrying today.

The wedding, titled ‘It’s a Beautiful Day: A Winter Wedding’, is taking place in Helskinki in the former office of Finnish architect Alvar Aalto.

Organised by the Alvar Aalto Academy, the idea was conceived last summer at the academy’s design seminar, which was themed around the idea of a beautiful day. Issey Miyake creative director Dai Fujiwara was in attendance, and suggested that all the keynote speakers at the seminar contribute to designing a wedding.

French furniture designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec are adapting chairs originally made for Italian furniture group Magis for the occasion.

Danish lighting and furniture designer Louise Campbell is assembling two candelabra for the bride and groom, while Dutch furniture and homeware designer Hella Jongerius is creating the corsages. Finnish graphic designer Aimo Katajamäki designed the invitation.

Fujiwara has created the wedding outfits for the couple and their baby son. Camper’s Miguel Fluxá Camper is designing the shoes.

The couple, Ulla-Maaria Mutanen and Jyri Engeström became involved in the project after meeting Laura Sarvilinna of Huippu Design Management at a party. Mutanen is the founder of design website Thinglike and Engeström works on Google’s new social networking products.
