Philips launches new flat LED bulb

Philips is launching a new flat LED bulb, the SlimStyle, that promises to reduce energy consumption by 85 per cent.

The bulb, which will initially launch in the US, lasts 25 times longer than a traditional 60-watt incandescent but with a similar brightness, according to Philips.

The SlimStyle’s flat surface designed to conduct heat away form the LED components, meaning no aluminium heat sink is needed, reducing the cost of the bulb.

It is said to last up to 22 years.

The SlimStyle will initially be sold in the US at Home Depot from this month for less than $10 (£6), and following the US trail may be rolled out to other countries, including the UK.
