The consultancy was approached by Henkel, which was looking to make its first bespoke Sellotape product.
Factorydesign says, ‘First and foremost it was designed as a tool to conquer the challenges of gift wrapping, and capture back some of this market from its competitors.’

The concept came out of sketching, model making and testing, and Factorydesign says, ‘We were developing and testing a lot of ideas concurrently and refining them down to their simplest form.
‘As always, there were a couple of standouts, but the “Ruby ring” concept was to prove the strongest and offer the greatest freedom and advantage to its end user. ’

The On-Hand is positioned like a ring, so the user’s hand is still free to hold down paper but gives enough stability for the tape to be pulled out and cut against the serrated edge. It can be refilled and allows varying lengths of tape to be cut as needed.
The design sits within the Sellotape brand and will be sold alongside other dispensers in the brand’s portfolio.

Scotch tape had one of these on the market a good few years ago. But handy all the same
