Something From Us creates Cornish brand for Dott

Designs of the Time Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly has appointed London consultancy Something From Us as senior design producer for branding project From Cornwall with Love.

Dott Cornwall is a collaboration between the Design Council, Cornwall Council and University College Falmouth, which aims to tackle social and economic challenges by involving communities in design. From Cornwall with Love (concept pictured above) will result in a new brand for the county, aiming to launch this year, which is intended to promote Cornish values through its produce.

Something From Us was originally appointed in September 2009 following a creative-led tender to join the design roster in July 2009. Although Something From Us had originally applied as designer, Dott felt that the consultancy had the skills to lead the project and promoted it in February, says Dott project and communications manager Lis Goulder.

Goulder says, ’We admired the energy and quality of its work and its understanding of Cornwall.’ Dott programme director Andrea Siodmok (pictured) adds, ’Something From Us had previous experience promoting local produce and food, which we thought would be very valuable to this project.’

Something From Us will be responsible for researching the Cornish market and developing the identity through workshops with local people. As well as driving industry, Dott hopes the project will help to establish links between designers and manufacturers in the county.

Something From Us is developing a strategy and will soon select a team of local designers from a roster established by Dott. Several interns from University College Falmouth will be appointed to help out on the project. Siodmok says that the project is needed now to align the brand of Cornwall with the reality of the industry.

’There are a lot of changes in Cornwall,’ says Siodmok. ’People envisage seaside towns and tourism, but there’s a vibrant creative economy here.’ Something From Us creative director Tom Tobia says, ’We plan to talk to Cornish producers, – from farmers, fishermen and cheese- makers to designer-makers, potters and sculptors – and bring them together to create an umbrella identity to promote Cornish produce locally, nationally and internationally.’

The visual element of the campaign will be dependent on these stakeholders and could take the form of a brand logo, marketing campaign or even a pop-up shop – Something From Us is also interested in creating a retail presence in London for Cornish producers. Tobia says, ’We’re creative, so we can’t help start to think about what it will look like, but we want to explore the possibilities and produce ideas together.’
