University of Reading aims to make tax forms easier to read

The University of Reading has won funding for a two-year research project that aims to make tax and mortgage forms easier to understand.

Having secured funding from the Arts & Humanities Research Council, the university will gather a team of information designers, academics, and graphic design and psychology postgraduate students to look at redesigning documents. The group will scrutinise leaflets and forms about benefits, tax, health, pensions and mortgages, making recommendations for clearer and simpler designs.

The team will work at the university’s Simplification Centre, which looks at how to make complex information clear. Members of Reading’s typography and graphic communication department will work on the project, along with researchers at the Royal College of Art, the University of the Arts London, Central St Martins College of Art and Design, Surrey University, Lancaster University and Cardiff University, as well as universities in Europe and Brazil.

The results of the project will be published in a paper at the end of the project.

Interesting concept. So the tax payer pays for tax forms to be re-designed then?
