Young Americans

Young design duo Zigelbaum & Coelho make their UK debut at London’s Riflemaker gallery this month with an interactive light installation which is somewhere between a chilled-out laser show and the innards of a living, breathing beast.

The pair, Jamie Zigelbaum and Marcelo Coelho, began collaborating while both were students at the MIT Media Lab. As well as working on projects at the university – involving predominantly human-computer interaction and media theory projects for Zigelbaum and paper computers, interactive garments and ‘digital gastronomy’ for Coelho – both organised international workshops and conferences about reality-based interaction.

Walking into the Riflemaker’s darkened gallery space, visitors can modify the designers’ luminescent pixel-tiles, changing the colour, composition and even rhythmic pulse of the LED lights. The result is a colourful room that feels like entering a pulsating solar system.

Zigelbaum & Coelho runs from 22 November – 26 February 2011 at Riflemaker 79 Beak Street, London W1.
