The modern art of conversation

As part of Design Event North East which launches next week, a handful of graphic designers will be inviting visitors to undertake a graphics treasure hunt around the streets of Newcastle.

The designers – Troika, Anthony Burrill, Daniel Eatock, Craig Ward and Keetra Dean Dixon – have been asked to respond to and modernise a 1936 instructive document called the Art of Conversation by Milton Wright, which taught bright young things how to charm their peers through chat.

The work will be exhibited in the streets of Newcastle on a trail from the station to Newcastle Library, which will include a 48-sheet billboard, empty shop windows and the library itself.

If you’re in search of visual clues for the event or won’t get a chance to wander the streets of Newcastle, here’s a sneak preview of some of the pieces on display.
