Dr Sharon Baurley replaces Tord Boontje as RCA head of Design Products

Academic Dr Sharon Baurley has been appointed as the new head of Design Products at the Royal College of Art.

Baurley replaces Tord Boontje, who has been in post since 2009 and is stepping down to focus on his own studio. She will take up her post on 20 January 2014.

Baurley joins the RCA from Brunel University, where she has been head of design at the School of Engineering & Design for the past three years.

Prior to that, she was reader at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.

Baurley conducted her PhD at the RCA and has also carried out research at Musashino Art University, Tokyo, and John Moores University, Liverpool.

An RCA statement says, ‘With a track record that straddles design, materials, engineering electronics and computer science, Dr Baurley’s appointment refreshes the academic vision and brings new direction and coherence to a programme which has always been at the forefront of design education.’

Dr Baurley says, ‘Design Products has a long history of innovation and a peerless reputation and I’m thrilled to be rejoining the College.

‘At the dynamic juncture between craft, design thinking, and new technological capabilities and structures there is an exciting opportunity to create new design methods and routes both within Design Products and beyond.’
