Some taxing artworks

Last week the death knell was sounded for the little round tax discs that have graced Britain’s cars for 93 years.

The papery windscreen adornments were officially made obsolete on 1 October, and as a tribute, a number of artists have created their own tax disc holders in a series punningly titled Pretty Taxing.

Artists including Sir Peter Blake, Gavin Turk, Pam Hogg, Mat Collishaw, Sarah Lucas, Jessica Albarn, Gary Hume, and Matthew Barney have all added their stamp to the discs, designed to be stuck onto any glass surface.

The project has been initiated by Vauxhall Art Car Boot, which says the project is about “the unexpected and making art accessible”, allowing people to “take their artwork on the road with them.”

Rather confusingly, Gary Hume has gone for a close-up of Michael Jackson’s face for his creation:
