West London computer graphics college Escape Studios launches a virtual school today, designed in-house.

The online learning tool, www.escapestudios.com, which cost around £150 000 to design and develop, offers live streaming of more than 600 high-definition educational videos.

The course instructs students in 3D animation, from modelling to rendering, using the Autodesk Maya application.

Escape Studios training development director Lee Danskin designed the interface, which he says was inspired directly by working in the classroom.

‘About two years ago we decided to get rid of notes in the classroom, and started to use an online system. It escalated from there.’

Danskin explains that the live streamed videos were introduced because ‘most e-learning systems are clunky and unpleasant to use. They are usually very text-based, something that video or multimedia professionals often recoil from’.

The facility comprises six modules, which can be accessed for about £240 per module.
