Photographers’ Gallery to host off-site exhibitions during refurbishment
The Photographers’ Gallery has unveiled its off-site programme, which will take place while the London gallery is closed for refurbishment from October.
London-based artist duo French Mottershead, Anders Petersen and Fiona Tan will work with the gallery on Bloomberg-sponsored projects, which will focus on the community in the surrounding Soho area.
The Photographers’ Gallery director Brett Rogers says, ‘We aim to attract a new audience to our events – people who live and work in Soho who might not know we’re here.’
The £8.7m redevelopment project has been led by architect O’Donnell & Tuomey, with assistance from engineers Arup and Dewhurst Macfarlane and Partners. The 15 month-long construction project, which will start at the beginning of October, will involve putting a ‘cardigan’ around the existing Ramillies Street building, creating three floors of public galleries and a new floor dedicated to educational programmes, says Rogers.
The façade will be made of sustainable hard wood, textured acrylic and anthracite-coloured terrazzo, and the new lobby will be made of glass, making the gallery more visible. The gallery’s café and shop will also be relocated on the ground floor.
The extension will have the look and feel of New York’s SoHo district and will act as a beacon to attract people from nearby Oxford Street to the gallery, says Rogers.
