Sir David Chipperfield awarded RIBA Royal Gold Medal

Sir David Chipperfield has been named by the Royal Institute of British Architects as the winner of this year’s Royal Gold Medal.

The Royal Gold Medal is approved personally by the Queen and given to a person or group of people who have had significant influence ‘either directly or indirectly on the advancement of architecture’.

Chipperfield won the Stirling Prize in 2007 for the Museum of Modern Literature in Germany, and the practice’s Neues Museum in Berlin, in partnership with Julian Harrap, was shortlisted for this year’s prize, losing out to Zaha Hadid’s Maxxi building in Rome.

Chipperfield says, ‘I am overwhelmed by the decision of the RIBA to award me the 2011 Royal Gold Medal and to join a list that includes so many great architects and personal heroes. I hope that my career will justify this great honour and that I can fulfil the expectations that this award bestows on me.’

He will be presented with the medal on 10 February 2011.
