Tonkin Liu unveils new Dover Esplanade
London-based architect Tonkin Liu has redesigned the Dover Esplanade as part of a £2m project to improve the town’s seafront.
Tonkin Liu was appointed in September 2009 following a competition organised by the Landscape Institute on behalf of a number of stakeholders, including Dover Harbour Board, Dover District Council and Kent County Council.
The consultancy proposed to enhance the seafront by introducing an accessible ramp between the esplanade and the beach, creating a wall shelter to improve seating areas and increasing and improving lighting.
Tonkin Liu project architect Neil Charlton says, ‘We wanted to extend the hours that the esplanade could be used, especially in the warm summer months.’
The project, which was part funded by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment’s Sea Change programme, has been inspired by the sea and features a wave-like wall and terrace and undulating columns.
