Floating pontoon wins London planning awards
A mile-long floating pontoon concept for the River Thames, created by architect Gensler, has won the London Mayor’s annual London Planning Award.
The awards, run by the Mayor, London First, the Royal Town Planning Institute and London councils, recognise planning professionals and organisations that have helped make London a better place to live, work and visit, say organisers.
Gensler’s concept for the London River Park involves a floating river walk along the north bank of the River Thames, connecting Blackfriars Bridge with the Tower of London.
Gensler, which also won the award for Best Conceptual Project, proposed that the project would be completed in 2012 to coincide with the Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
The design will also include five themed pavilions that can be used to house events after the 2012 Olympic Games.
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, says, ‘The brilliance of this design, apart from its sheer beauty, is that it will act as a fantastic catalyst for rejuvenating the Thames as a major transport artery.’
Other winners include dRMM Architects’ Clapham Manor Primary School for Best Built Project – Community Scale Scheme, and Shepheard Epstein Hunter Architects’ Enfield Library for Best Built Project.
