Manchester united behind a new broom

Manchester may have turned red over the past weeks with the success of United, but the city appears to be adopting a shade of environmentally-friendly green.

The city’s Northern Quarter unveiled a ten foot-high stainless steel broom last week designed by artist George Wyllie, called A New Broom.

Locals were invited to help sweep the area with replica brooms signed by Wyllie.

Lead artist for the scheme Liam Curtin says: ‘It is a symbol for the regeneration of the Northern Quarter and celebrates the ordinary working people, who give the area its character and vitality and whose contribution is rarely acknowledged.’
