Alan Kitching produced the images for the Library and Information Commission’s report on Britain’s public libraries designed by Pentagram. The design reflects the issues raised in the report, contrasting traditional printing techniques with new technology. Kitching emphasised traditional techniques to compliment the digital printing for the text in the report. ‘The delight I had was in attempting to make the “old” look new,’ says Kitching.

Mike Henderson photographed the images for the Just Talk campaign for Orange. The complete identity concept for the Orange service has been designed by Glasgow design consultancy 999 Design. Just Talk is mainly aimed at a youth market, using off-the-wall images of characters who make eye contact with the viewers. ‘The original campaign moved on from graphic black and white to high-contrast colour, after a test shot on Polachrome HC,’ says Henderson.

The image used for the redesign of the Debenham’s range of hosiery was photographed by Mike Owen. The design had to stand out against the immediate competition, and a combination of black and white and full-colour photography with different combinations of the background create individuality with a cohesive range feel. Owen’s deliberate use of Polaroid film and lighting techniques emphasise the theme of ‘great legs’.
