Give designers a sign to return home

Since returning to the UK from Hong Kong, gaining six years of experience, I am hardly shocked at the complaints that there are not enough midweight designers around.

Forced to gain design work abroad in the early 1990s due to a lack of enthusiasm or economy to even take on juniors, perhaps midweights or potential seniors are still waiting for a sign to return.

I have been looking for a suitable position outside London for several months but the design practices’ elusiveness astounds me – another topic recently raised (DW 8 May). There is something to be said about a design group that prefers to just get on and do it instead of blowing its own trumpet but should this prohibit the creative British designers from returning? It’s starting to sound like it could.
