Co-op companies could merge

The Co-operative Wholesale Society says it is “too early” to discuss possible corporate identity changes after announcing a possible merger with sister group Co-operative Retail Services.

A statement, from the two groups’ respective boards, says: “We can confirm that the two societies have entered into discussions and that a consultation process involving members’ representatives has commenced.

“The discussions and consultation processes are being held to investigate the possibility of achieving a merger between the two companies. Should these discussions and consultations prove successful, it is anticipated that a merger should be achieved some time next year.”

Last month Identica created new packaging for the Co-operative Wholesale Society’s own-brand products. The consultancy’s aim was to revitalise the performance of the company over a three year period (DW 3 September).

The two groups are, on an individual basis, part of the wider Co-Operative movement. Their combined interests include retailing, wholesaling and undertaking services.
