Five designers have been awarded £10 000 each by the Design Museum and Esmé Fairbairn Foundation under their Design Mart bursary scheme (DW 22 July).

The grants have been awarded to: furniture designer Pascal Anson; Michael Cross and Julie Mathias for their Flood lighting installation (pictured below right); Matthias Megyeri for his ‘witty interpretations’ of home security products; product designer Julia Lohmann; and Peter Traag for his innovative furniture designs.

The five winners were chosen from a group of 15 product designers whose work was exhibited in the Design Museum in September. According to the museum’s director Alice Rawsthorn, the scheme is intended to come to the aid of recently graduated designers when they are going through ‘the most vulnerable period of their careers’.

The judging panel comprised Rawsthorn, designers Ron Arad, Tord Boontje, Tom Dixon, Michael Marriott, Jasper Morrison and Marc Newson, as well as Emily Campbell of the British Council and Gareth Williams of the Victoria & Albert Museum.
