Have we changed since 1951?

“The British are a nation of many different parts. In appearance, too, they are just as mixed – certainly one of the most mixed people in the world.”

This is an extract from an article on The People of Britain, a display design by the late great James Gardner for the Festival of Britain in 1951. Obviously, we were a mixed-up bunch even then.

The article is from an original copy of the brochure for the festival, which has fallen into DW hands.

Each festival project which was featured in the brochure – some designed by Hugh Casson – has a commendably large section about its design, with an entire review of design closing the brochure.

Beat that, Imagination.
