Well, having dumbfounded most of the recipients of the said object, Ergo, which moved from High Street Kensington to Primrose Hill on Monday, explains that it is based on Dick Whittington. ‘He used a red spotted hanky to carry his worldly possessions,’ says Ergo creative partner Simon John.

‘We are seriously considering buying a black cat to go with it,’ he adds, claiming the imminent revival of polka dots in the fashion world has also been inspired by the former Lord Mayor of London.
