We should let students ‘bust the laws of gravity’

“The future is here and we need to take responsibility for shaping it.” No it isn’t! Today is here and we need to stop designing it the way we expect the future to be.

Take the rules out of design education and don’t just allow students to bust a brief, but bust the laws of gravity. Heaven forbid that a student should show imagination by designing a lunch box for a radiator or a shopping trolley for a unicorn. Credit should be awarded for creative talent; not justifying a futuristic, but mediocre creation with a piece of text that satisfies an out-of-date course criteria.

Keep futurologists out of design and let it happen naturally. Uncertainty is exciting!
