Neal Potter Design Associates has been approached to design a 1m cultural exhibition to mark Expo ’98 in Lisbon.

The request for Potter’s design skills came “out of the blue”. Potter says: “I just received it on the fax.” The client, Parque Expo ’98, is funding Balanço de Século – Looking at the Century – which will present “ideas, shapes, happenings and main tendencies of the 1988 to 1998 period”, explains Potter.

Festival director Gabriela Cerqueira asked Potter for “a conceptual approach”, not “an encyclopaedic” one. Meanwhile, nine UK consultancies will be promoting themselves at the Expo through a new organisation called Classificado.

Brennan & Whalley, Bremner & Orr, Button/Csaky, Epoch Design, Event, Furneaux Stewart, HP:ICM, Land Design Studio and Sledge have joined Classificado. Their work will be represented through information panels in a Lisbon showroom throughout the Expo.

“It should be an excellent way to make contact with Portuguese firms and those participating in the Expo,” says Classificado managing director Mick Green, adding that the organisation will be representing graphics, architecture, construction, lighting and audio-visual designers.
