Thomas Matthews picked for Flying Scotsman exhibition

The National Railway Museum, based in York, is set to draft in Thomas Matthews to develop graphics for a permanent £700 000 interactive exhibition on the Flying Scotsman.

Land Design Studio was appointed last month to create the overall concept for the exhibition following a three-way pitch in May. The museum has yet to formally appoint Thomas Matthews to the project, says a spokesperson.

The exhibition will allow visitors to view the Flying Scotsman as it travels across the UK. An interactive display featuring webcam technology and filming techniques will deliver real-time footage of the locomotive.

The gallery will display objects relating to the history of the Flying Scotsman, show illustrations by Sir Nigel Gresley, the locomotive’s designer, and tell the stories of passengers, crew and owners.

‘We want to create something contemporary that reveals the history behind the Flying Scotsman,’ says Sophie Thomas, director of Thomas Matthews.

The exhibition is scheduled to open next April.
