Consultancies spurn South African talent

Since arriving in the UK from South Africa five months ago I have sent out about 80 CVs.

I asked the owner of a small design group in London why a person who has studied for three years, won numerous awards and owned a successful design group in South Africa would struggle to get even a junior design position. His answer was, if I had studied at a British institute, had a degree and had worked for two or more years in the UK, I would be considered.

To put this statement in perspective: I was invited to an interview. The day before the interview I was told that as my portfolio was on CD it would “waste their time and my time” to attend the interview as there was no PC and no plug socket in the interview room.
